Overweight Children

The US Surgeon General calls upon the nation to work together in finding solutions to the problem of obesity and overweight. They have created Surgeon General's call to action fact sheets to highlight important information about obesity. Please view the action sheet.

Lee County School Nurses provide health education and prevention services to promote healthy and productive lifestyles for our children. They also meet the health needs of children with chronic and complex medical conditions such as diabetes and asthma. It is the school nurse's responsibility to help students follow their care plans during school hours. The school nurses must be familiar with every student's treatment regimen, including any devices or medical procedures the treatment requires.

Legislation, technology and medical advances have resulted in an increase in the number of children in schools with complex medical problems requiring skilled care. Having a school nurse available to prepare care plans, assist with the completion of an IEP when needed and to provide skilled services has made it possible for many students to attend classes at school rather than be schooled at home.

In several Lee County Schools, 60-70 medications prescribed by physicians are administered to students each day. The school nurse manages the school's medication program checking that each medication has a signed permission from the physician and the parent, and making certain that clinic assistants and any staff members involved with the administration of these medications are properly trained.

Other responsibilities of the school nurse include implementing mandated screening programs such as vision and scoliosis screening, preventing the spread of communicable diseases, providing emergency care, coordinating health services and education with faculty and collaborating with parents and community health providers.
