Suggested Options
Option 1:  It is important for the parent to understand that there is no credit given by the Lee County School District during the period of time your child is enrolled in a Home Education program. If your child has been in the program for a year, and then returns to the public school, grade placement and credits will be determined by the school administrators according to district policies. Basically, the student would receive the credit for the major subjects he/she had studied in home education after he/she has successfully completed his/her first semester back in the public school and provided proof of the core subjects studied.

Under Option 1, the high school student being home schooled would continue in the academic subjects normally given in the public school. The parent assumes the responsibility for providing the textbooks and/or curriculum. (See information in HEP packet regarding textbooks from the Florida School Book Depository).

If the high school student remains in the home education program for the duration of his/her high school years, he/she will not receive a high school diploma from the Lee County School District. However, he/she may receive a high school diploma from an accredited correspondence school. (See Option 3).

Option 2: The high school student who desires to receive his/her GED may do so by being enrolled as a home school student. A home schooled student may take the GED test at age 16 with permission of the parent/guardian and after passing an official GED practice test. Passing this test is equivalent to a high school diploma and would eliminate the need for establishing a required number of credits for graduation. The Complete GED Preparation Book is available through the GED office. A copy of the GED diploma must be mailed to this office in order to close a program. Information concerning the GED Office and the GED Test can be found by following this link. GED preparation classes are made available through the Hi-Tech Schools and Adult Education.

Option 3: Under the List of Curriculums in the HEP Packet, you will find a number of correspondence schools that are accredited. The parent needs to contact the school and request a catalog. (Many of these catalogs are available for viewing at the Home Education Office).

These schools provide the textbooks and tests in order to keep a transcript of your child's credits. They will also award your child a high school diploma upon completion of their course.

Registration and Portfolio Review
Parents who enroll their high school child from a public school after the school year has begun are requested to attend a High School Informational Meeting. Call 337-8259 for information and registration for the meeting. Parents, will be required to submit a portfolio consisting of a log and samples of the student's work during the school year. Failure to attend this portfolio review meeting or failure to produce a log constitutes an automatic withdrawal from the Home Education Program. The student must then return to public or private school.

Dual Enrollment for College Credit:
The home education student may participate in dual enrollment at Edison Community College and Florida Gulf Coast University. The credits earned are counted toward both high school credit and an associate degree. Legislation was passed in 1996 allowing registered homeschoolers free tuition. The student must be 15 years of age and be the equivalent of a sophomore, junior or senior. The parent must supply the college with student test scores from the ACT-E or SAT-R or take the college entrance test. You will need your Acknowledgement of Home Education Enrollment as proof that you are enrolled with Lee County School District.

Edison Community Office Registrar: 489-9361
Florida Gulf Coast University Registrar: 590-7878

Instructions for Parents of High School Students
  • Prior to or after registering with the Home Education Office, the parent must sign out and return any textbooks to the high school the student was attending.
  • The parent may be scheduled to attend a Portfolio Review after the first 30 days of the registration or sometime during the school year. If the parent has not received the books that the student will be working from, the parent is required to assign the student appropriate material that may be purchased or borrowed from the public library.
  • Florida Statutes require that an evaluation or test be given to the student at the end of his/her school year. This is the parents' responsibility. The results of the evaluation, or test, must be submitted to the Home Education Office by the parent before the student can be enrolled in Home Education for the following school year. If the student is enrolled with an accredited correspondence school, the parent may send us a copy of their Progress Report as one of the testing/evaluation options.
  • If the student acquires a GED during the school year, the parent is to send a copy of the GED diploma to the Home Education Office before we can close the parent's program.
  • If the student plans on returning to a public school, the parent must submit the Termination Form (found inside the HEP packet) to the Home Education Office or to the School Choice office when the student registers. This form should also be submitted for any other reason the Program is closed.
  • Statutes requires that the student and the parent sign a Declaration of Intent. This letter advises the school district a Home School student between the ages of 16 and 18 terminates the Home Education Program, Florida Student that he/she may lose his/her driving privileges. This letter will be mailed to theparent at the beginning of the new school year if the parent fails to register with Home Education or any public school.
